U.S. Half Dollars
History of the U.S. Half-Dollar Coin
Though not commonly used today, half-dollar coins have a long history of heavy use alongside other denominations of coinage but have faded out of general circulation for many reasons. They were produced in fairly large quantities until the year 2002, when the U.S. Mint ceased production of the coin for general circulation. The half-dollar was first minted in the year 1794 and has featured many designs throughout its history. One of the most notable designs is the Kennedy half-dollar, first minted in 1964, which was created in honor of President John F. Kennedy after his assassination. The Kennedy half-dollar is still being minted today, although it is now primarily for collectors.
The decline in the usage of half-dollar coins is attributed to several factors, including their large size and weight, which made them less convenient to carry compared to other coins. Additionally, the increasing popularity of electronic transactions and credit cards has reduced the need for larger denominations of coinage in everyday commerce.
For collectors, half-dollar coins hold significant historical value and are a popular item among numismatists. Special editions, proof sets, and coins minted with 90% silver before 1971 are particularly sought after.
